I cannot get Ubuntu 9:04 to install on my computer

Asked by Ken Warwick

I am a newbie with Ubuntu, but have used it before.
I am not a programmer.

Every time I go to install Ubuntu 9:04 on my computer I get the following messages:

[4.267299] IO APIC resources could not be allocated.
Loading, please wait...

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2ubuntu7) built in shell (ash)

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

I have made multiple CD disks,
I have used winmd5sum to verify they are correct and etc..
I want to install it on a clean HD.
It won't even run off the disk on my machine.
I always get the above information which I have tried looking up and to date have not found an explanation I really understand or can implement as a solution.
I am at my wits end here.
Can anyone help me with this please?
Thanks.

Hmmm...
Have you been able to get Ubuntu running on it before?
Have you tried using an alternative-install CD as opposed to the live-CD?

Yes, I was running 8:10 b/4.
Yes, I have tried running an install cd as well.

If you can get to the welcome screen from the CD, hit F6; select "noapic" and try to run the CD. That might give you something.

Hmmm... I hate to say it, but I'm not sure what's up. Maybe check around your BIOS menu and (if you can) make sure that APIC is enabled. This is a shot in the dark though.
Until someone smarter than me comes up with a clever solution, and if you're feeling adventurous, you could try a minimal CD <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD> or if all else fails you could install 8.10 and then upgrade to 9.04.

OK, Thanks, I have just been looking at the BIOS and all seems well there. I did try the upgrade and it wouldn't work b/4.
Perhaps I will load 8:10 again and retry. Will look at minimal CD as well. Will get back at it tomorrow.

Be careful editing the xorg.conf file. I don't know how comfy you are with command lines.

Hello,

I've exactly the same problem.

There is no settings in the BIOS in order to set or not APIC.

However, the 9.04 version always shows:
"IO APIC resources could not be allocated"

Moreover, my computer becomes hot even if the CPU isn't used.

I didn't had this behavior with the 8.04 version.

Do you know when this regression will be fixed ?

Thanks.

I have installed ubuntu 9,04 on 20 gb disk space, installation filled all space and does not allow to install upgrades. How can create space? or is it normal for the installation to fill all 20 gb space?

Can you help with this problem?
