/dev/scd0 disappeared after Jaunty upgrade - how do I get it back?

Asked by Jeremy Jongsma

I upgraded my Dell Vostro 1710 from 8.10 to 9.04 this afternoon. After reboot, /dev/scd0 (my CD/DVD drive) was missing. No CD drives appear in lshw or dmesg. The drive still works fine in windows, so it's not a hardware issue. How do I get 9.04 to find the drive again?

The fact it worked in Windows must have been a fluke - it started disappearing there too, turns out it was a cable connection that must have wiggled loose during the upgrade.
