Hangs On Startup

Asked by jnaymie

When I start Ubuntu, it will show the kernel loading text but when it starts to actually load the GUI it just stops. This would happen to me sometimes with Windows as well (Windows x64 Bit Edition). Usually with windows It would start up after re-starting a couple of times but with Ubuntu it is the same ever time. I even memorized the pattern that my little yellow light makes when it loads and it always gets stuck in the same spot. I re-installed Ubuntu (as completely as I know how to) but nothing. It did work at the beginning but when i tried to enable desktop effects and installed the Nvidia driver it wouldn't start again. I think it probably has something to do with that but then it would have gone away when I re-installed Ubuntu so either i didn't re-install Ubuntu completely or that's not the cause. If anyone has any input I'd be grateful. My system specs are...

CPU: AMD +4400 Dual Core 2.1 GHz
RAM: 2.0 Gb of OCZ (silver i think)
GPU: Nvidia 8800 GTX ASUS Edition
Hard Disk(s): 2x 300.1 Gb NTSC
Mobo: ASUS A8N32-SLI DELUX

I'm pretty sure now that it has to do with the Nvidia drivers because I completely deleted the partition and Ubuntu worked when I re-installed it but once again, after downloading the Nvidia driver for Desktop Effects, Ubuntu seems to freeze while loading. It might also be that it actually does load but it doesn't display anything on the screen because it isn't receiving any signal from the computer.
