Newbie needs help with Ubuntu install

Asked by John Smithers

Hey everyone. My friend recently showed me linux and I love it. The problem is that I'm not good with code or anything dealing with the behind the scenes work with it. I tried to install it using a CD after I downloaded it. I got an error message dealing with "Graphics interface". I have a Dell inspiron 5160. Any answers are welcome, including telling me I'm screwed.

Thanks.

What graphic card do you have? You should change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with the appropriate configuration for your card and monitor. Check the horizontal and vertical refresh rate, the resolution and the driver used for your card.

If you are not able to install Ubuntu, you can download the alternate version, where the installation is done in text mode instead of with a pretty graphical interface. That should do the trick.

Can you help with this problem?
