Can't record on Intel ICH6--Realtek ALC260

Asked by stepasha

I am trying to get my microphone working under Dapper Beta. I was able to record fine when I first installed Dapper flight CD 4, but after an update I have never been able to get recording working again. I am now using Dapper 6.06 Beta. I don't know what changed between then and now. Clearly this card can work, but I don't know where the problem lies.

I can play sounds fine. I can even play sounds from multiple apps at the same time, but I can't record. I've tried killing esd (a suggestion from ubuntu forums), and I've unmuted everything. I can hear myself through the microphone when I unmute it, which would suggest a permissions problem, but I have write permissions to /dev/dsp as part of the audio group.

Sound Recorder acts like it records, but when you play it back, it's just silence. Audacity won't even let me choose a device to record from.

I've been googling for fixes to this all week, but can't seem to find any. I would be happy to submit a bug report, but I don't know which app to say it's in reference to. Alsa? Gstreamer?
I've listed some information that hopefully will be helpful:

hey, i have the same problem. i was about to open a new support request when i saw this one, i though it would be better to comment here.

in my case i have a sony vaio vgn-fs115b, i can hear sound but i cant record anything. audacity reconize my sound input, but it did't record anything. i'm abble to record stuff with the same hardware in a testing debian. i dont know exactaly what kind of output to give, so ill give the same output. if there is something more with can be helpfull please let me know. any ideas of what can be happening? thanks!

Same here on my new ThinkPad X60s:

  ALSA device list:
    #0: HDA Intel at 0xee240000 irq 22
  hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...

Sound output works fine (in Totem, for instance). Recording does not work (tested with Audacity and Skype).

I have installed alsa-lib and alsa-driver 1.0.11 (and even tried cvs at one point) to try to resolve the problem, but with no improvement. Or so I thought. I tried ekiga this morning, and I was surprised to hear my own voice when I tried the sound test. I then tried sound-recorder, and it records my voice just fine. Unfortunately I still can't record sounds from other sources. Audacity won't let me record (and refuses to recognize that I have a sound device).

What precipitated this discovery that ekiga now works was looking at gconf-editor. I saw that in Ekiga no output device was listed, so I changed it to /dev/dsp. I opened ekiga, and it went through the configuration program (I may have cleared the settings at some point in the past out of frustration). When it came to audio configuration, it properly showed HDA Intel as both the input and output device. The test worked (though the audio was slightly garbled). I then tried sound recorder, and the audio recorded cleanly. I still don't get why I can't record system sounds. for example I've been wanting to record an online stream, but I can't do it.

It works for me now after compiling the ALSA driver as a module instead of in-kernel.

I've got a HDA-Intel sound card with STAC9200 chip also (on my Dell B120 laptop running Dapper). I too am having no luck getting the mic to work. I installed alsa 1.0.11 (driver, library, utils, etc.) but still no luck. Two questions:

1. What does it mean to compile as a module vs in-kernel (I'm still a linux newbie)?
2. What volume controls do you see in alsamixer? I only have the following: master, pcm, and capture. Should I have others?

Hi Guys,

I luckily solved the issue, Skype 1.3 beta is working great now with Alsa. I have a dell d410 with ICH6 sound controller.

I followed the instructions here:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#How_to_configure_sound_to_work_properly_in_GNOME

but I used a tweaked /etc/asound.conf I got from here:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/printthread.php?t=32063&page=2&pp=40

Here it is:

I also have an HDA-Intel sound card with STAC9200 chip, and the mic doesn't work. But the instructions for fixing the situation are waaaaaay beyond my understanding. So far, I must admit, I am disappointed with the Ubuntu operating system. The mouse click response will make anyone nuts.

i searched a lot, but finally this text, helped me and my hda-intel device record(!), hope you can record too :D
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1357412&postcount=23

quoted:

Just fixed this on my machine - but I believe that the fix will work for anyone with this particular mic/input problem that has the SigmaTel STAC9200, 922x or 927x chipset for Intel HDA. Ok, here's what you do:

1. backup your existing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
2. append the following to the end of the file:

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

Done.

Now reload your modules or reboot. Go into alsamixer. If everything went as expected, you should see some new options, eg - 'front mic' as an input source and IEC958 (S/PDIF) settings. Play with these freely later - they have nothing to do with the mic problem. Anyway, make sure the input is set to mic and nothing else. Turn your capture setting all the way up to 100%, capture playback at maybe 50%; tweak these to your tastes. Now, record something using your favorite audio recording utility.

eg - arecord -f cd TheSoundOfSuccess.wav

Play it back. Hopefully, everything is good and nice.

If you're curious, I came upon this fix after reading a few threads about setting the model in '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' if alsa was unable to correctly detect it. It referred you to the file 'alsa-kernel/Documentation/ALSA-Configuration.txt' within the alsa-driver sources. Interestingly enough, there was no reference to any STAC 92xx codecs. So I dug into the 'sound/pci/hda' directory and came upon the 'patch_sigmatel.c' source file. In this file, all the STAC 92xx codecs were referenced by the model identifier 'ref' which the hda driver uses to load manufacturer specfic presets (SigmaTel, Realtek, etc.). Looking at the main hda_codec.c source, these presets should theoretically be loaded automatically by using the device's vendor id for identification, but it just doesn't seem to be. Anyway, if this works for you, bump this thread with a response so that it might help someone else with the problem.

peace.
