Installing Plugins

Asked by scorpy71

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04, the Jaunty Jackalope - released in April 2009. I have also installed various plugins that I have required from time to time using internet connection at home. Now, my question is this-
          (i) I need to install these plugins on a different computer that does not have an internet connection.
(ii) How should I go about getting all the additional plugins (that are not part of the ubuntu cd) from the my home pc (that has all the plugins) on to a portable media like a blank cd or a pen-drive?
(iii) If (ii) is possible, what should i do to/how should I install the same on the other pc?

What Plugins are you talking about?

But... just do as you said: Copy them to a CD or USB-memory and let it roll...

Greetings mid

Sam suggested a solution on 13th. I followed the second link that is https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware#Installing%20packages%20without%20an%20Internet%20connection

Heres what I got:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But it is also possible to do it without CDs or DVDs, using a simple USB key for example to transfer only the packages you need. Here's how:
    * Open synaptic
    * Select the packages you wish to install.
    * Click on File->Generate package download script
    * Save the script on your USB key.
    * Go to the other PC (with GNU/Linux on it so that you can run the script) and run the script on it. It will download the packages you selected and all necessary dependencies based on what you already have on your PC. Nothing more, nothing less.
    * Get the downloaded packages back to the other PC.
    * Open synaptic and click on File->Add downloaded packages and select the script from the USB key.

This is what I did:
- I opened System->Administration->synaptic package manager
- went to multimedia and selected all the packages that I have installed
- Clicked on File->Generate package download script
- On the "save script' pop-up, I chose my USB drive and gave it a name and pressed save
- On checking the saved file, it shows the type as "shell script (application/x-shellscript)" and size of the saved file is 10 bytes
- I took this USB to the PC that does not have an internet connection and double clicked the saved file.
- The following message appears on the pop-up:
Do you want to run "downloadscript", or display its contents?
"downloadscript" is an executable text file.
along with four options: "Run in Terminal" , "Display" , "Cancel" and "Run"
- I clicked the option "Run" whereupon, the pop-up disappeared.
- What next? The size of the saved file remains 10 bytes.

I am sorry. The problem might be something very trivial. I am NOT conversant with the system. Can I get some advice about how I should proceed? Again, my requirement is to collate all the packages that I have already downloaded from the internet into a pen drive/cd-rom/dvd-rom and update all those into another machine that does not have an internet connection. Thanx.

Where are the packages?

You create the script to - download - certain packages, in order to copy script - and - packages to USB.
Without Internet the other pc needs to get the packages from somewhere else.
Quote:
.... run the script on it. It will download the packages you selected...
.... Get the downloaded packages back to the other PC

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Offline
Quote:
USB keydrive where store the scripts and dowloaded packages

Downloaded packages are in
/var/cache/apt/archives/

as long as you don't clean the cache.

Copy packages of your choice to USB and then
to PC without internet into:
/var/cache/apt/archives/

Can you help with this problem?
