Drivers 8600GT

Asked by Agustin

Hi, i need some help, i have a Nvidia GeForce XFX 8600GT 512Mb and Ubuntu 9.04. The problem is that the system doesn't recognize it so i can't use Compiz or any like that.
I try to install them by Envy but it doesn't work, or downloading the 7xx drivers from nvidia.com.
if someone know how to make it work just answer ! thanks !

HI :)

have you tried looking up your card in Synaptic Package Manager to see if there's something special in there for it?

Good luck and regards from

It does sound like your drivers are the problem. Nvidia drivers for linux are often behind, but they at least support linux. If you can't find updated drivers in Synaptic Package Manager, try going to:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

In fact, it looks like it's listed as supported. I find driver and instructions on their page at:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_185.18.31.html

The only problem is that if you update the kernel after installing, you typically have to re-install the driver. Not a biggie since you will have done it once, and what you GAIN is well worth it. I used their drivers for my old computer and found it worked A LOT better in FC2; don't need it here in Ubuntu on my new 'puter.

@ Larry,

Just to clarify this for my own knowledge...

The most recent kernel upgrade I did (14 I think...) did not affect my drivers, hence my displays came up normally. Has this been changed, because I do recall 13 breaking my display forcing me to fix it like you suggested, and I know has been a issue.

So is this still an issue, or just a fluke for me :)

@ Agustin
I agree with the previous posters...I would certainly get the latest nvidia driver and install it manually and that should work fine with your video card, you still may need to tweak it to work 100%.

Good luck,

Can you help with this problem?
