installing help ubuntu

new to ubuntu, have a crashed XP system a friend told me about ubuntu, im trying to install on system but my pc wont load CD but it will load the widows CD. i have tried the amd 64 bit and the i386 both will not word??? i have also tried burning to a DVD. with no luck!! HELP

Were you able to load the CD up to the menu point? Or did it not load at all? Generally you should be sure to burn the correct ISO for your PC architecture, so if you have a processor which is not 64 bit, you can just stick with the i386. Be sure to verify the md5sum- you can learn how to here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM and burn at a low speed, when you do.

As well, did you burn it as a CD Image, or a data Disc?

hi, i'm new to ubuntu as well and i'm having problems running the os.
i burned the .iso file onto a "bootable" cd using nero. i restart my pc, press the boot from cd button, then all i get is german instructions, but i downloaded it from a north american mirror. and what it looks like from the german words is there is some kind of error. now everytime i boot my pc without the cd, i get a german error, with four choices and 5 seconds to reply. if i leave it, nothing happens and windows starts normally. i don't know what to do now. i need help, please!

ps: i dont want to format my pc either. i havent done it, and i dont plan to in the near future.

ok i get a bad problem when i tried to install ubuntu i booted from cdrom it loaded up and i hit start / install and then it loaded up the kernal thing and went to this black screen with a little flashing _ at the top and now it wont load windows or install ubuntu
