live cd don't work, alternative cd can't setup raid device

Asked by Harniver

I'm trying to install ubuntu feisty ( 7.04 ) on my new computer wich is:
- cpu amd64 X2 4200
- motherboard asus M2N
- video Geforce 6600 GT
- 2x hdd 160gb SATA that should make a raid 0 hardware ( fake raid )

The alternative cd displays the 2 hdd as not in raid; i try a lot but i was only able to setup software raid ( not suitable cause i need a dual-boot machine ).
The live cd, instead, blocks after the initial screen ( with the "ubuntu" logo and the progress bar ), just when appears the brown background and the mouse icon; so i couldn't do as shown in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto .
What can i do to install feisty on the raid device?
[ excuse my poor english... ]

Thanks for the question.

You can set up a software raid instead of the fake raid. This is recommended in any case, since fake raids are very unreliable.

Here are some instructions how this can be done. http://mywheel.net/blog/index.php/software-raid-in-ubuntu/

I hope this helps.

As i know, software raid is already not supported by windows, and i need it. Is there a way to use software raid also on windows?

There is some information that I found regarding raid on windows, however it requires Windows XP Professional or Server. Perhaps this would be of some help if you have the requirements:

I have a similar problem: trying to install Feisty on a RAID 0 - I don't know if it's "fake" or "real", since I supposedly have a Nvidia raid controller on my Abit KN8 SLI mb...
I have 2 120Gb HDD's in RAID0, 2 partitions - primary with XP Pro, second NTFS (free)
The installer sees only 2 phisical drives, so I aborted, afraid to lose data..
Any ideas?
Tnx

Harnier: try with option noacpi when liveCD starts [F6 -as I remember]

It really works: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto.
BTW Nvidia has fake=software raid.
I moved my kubuntu 7.04 from single HDD on other machine to RAID 0. It works. You must install dmraid package... and so on.
