Deleted to much

Asked by Rob Frerejean

My system upgraded Firefox to 3.5, but it´s not working that great. Not in my language, hangs all the time and so on. I wanted the old 3.0 back but was unable to get it back to how it was. So I did a search and deleted everything on my Computer with the words firefox.

Now I have reinstalled firefox 3.0 again, but nothing seems to work. Bookmarks are not accesable for some reason. So I tried Epiphany but after starting that it says...File “/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-C.html” not found. And after starting Skype, I have to read the EUL everytime and put in my password. I beleive I deleted to much.

How can I fix this?

Only deleting files is not the way to remove an applications because "traces" remain in some common system files.
Look in Synaptic Manager and if there Firefox 3.5 is marked as installed then remove it by right-clicking on it and choosing "Complete removal" and then clicking Apply.
After 3.5 is removed try if Firefox 3.0 is working fine. If "no" go again to Synaptic, find there the 3.0 and REinstall it the same way.
Hope this will solve your problem.

You can run Synaptic Manager by System-->Administration.
Your bookmarks should remain untouched in your Home directory in the hidden subdirectory .mozilla. Find it by Places-->Home and there press Ctrl+h to see the hidden files.

Hi,

That is exactly what I did, but it still isn´t working. I even used
Ubuntu Tweak to clean up some more. But still having the same problem.

In Synaptic Package Manager try "Fix broken packages" from the "Edit" menu and then "Apply", good luck with this!

Tom, I already tried that without any luck. I just reinstalled
everything back from scratch. Now it´s working fine again.

Only one other BIG problem. My /home is on a separate partition and it
is encrypted. I did not write down the pass code, so everything is gone.
It´s not accessible, so I need to format it. And I just saved soooooooo
much in that home folder.

I need a bigger external disk, so I can back up everything.

Oooo, unlucky. It's always harsh losing all your data. Solving one problem often introduces other hassles. It's fine to have the /home on a separate partition but if encrypted then you need to be able to decrypt (sounds like something from a Frankenstein movie). Anyway, sorry to hear about the loss
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
