Very noisy fan in hp dv4 lap top with ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Sael

I have a brand new hp dv4-1124 lap top. First thing after opening the box, I installed ubuntu 9.04. Almost everything works out of the box. But the noisy fan is driving me absolutely crazy. It runs at full speed for 10 seconds, slows down for 30 seconds, then up again...

I have tried acpi, mbmon, lm-sensons without success. Does anyone know how to control the fan speed or the temperatures at which it starts to work faster?

I would be really thankful to the person(s) who help me out of this!!!

There might be a problem with dirt in your system. I have the same problem. When I open my laptop and look at my ventilator, I see so much dust. I disassemble it and make it clean. Then it runs quietly again.

You can try adding CPU freq to your panel. Right click the panel and click on add to panel. Find processor speed. Then you can reduce your CPU speed. That will slow down the ventilator too.

Rob,
Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately it's of no use to me. My computer is new, so there is no dust in it.

I have already tried what you say about the Cpu freq applet. It does not make any difference. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I finally called Hp help center. They say it is normal for the fan to run like that. Upon my insistance, they are going to take a look at the computer. I will tell you what they have to say about this problem.
