Makemusic finale won't play sound

Asked by kwolee89

Hello all. For those that do not know already, finale is a wonderful, excellent, and to me a very important music program that opens .mus sheet music and plays them all the while showing the progress of the song and where the song is playing at in the sheet music at every point in time.

I installed it on the wine emulator, and it works to a degree, but the only problem is that there is no sound playing while I play the musical piece. I did some research and I think it might be due to there not being an alsa driver installed for wine OR it is not configured.

I would like to know how to configure it and get it to work so that finale works. Complete, thorough, step-by-step, easy to understand, and simple instructions would be excellent.

Here is my reference where it says you need winealsa driver installed: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/makemusic-finale-2003-under-wine-573064/

It would be very kind of you to tell me how to fix this. I am tired of windows vista now. I use that for finale. Linux seems better in so many ways.

Thank you. I hope to find out this problem someday because a person said he got it working on one of the linux forums(I think the same as the link). I will try to answer and comment back if anyone asks questions or has suggestions I should try out. Of course I can not answer everyone, but I will resolve this question when appropriate.

Sincerely yours,
Ki Lee

HI :)

Most of keep a working dual-boot or have a virtual machine with Windows on it so don't worry about having to go back into Windows occasionally.
http://www.linuxquestions.org
is an excellent site and it's well worth posting your own question there or adding to the end of someone elses. I would recommend posting a new question to see if you can catch any new peoples interest. Also the Wine forums are often well worth looking through and posting in
http://forum.winehq.org/
and also look up the particular application in their application databse
http://appdb.winehq.org/
we really need people to volunteer information in there so any help you can offer about how you've got Finale working would help the wider linux community too.

With any multimedia problems its worth making sure you have run through the steps in this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
I am not sure if these guides can help you directly but its usually worth running through these guides, hopefully something early in either of these might help
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

I am just hoping one of our sound experts pops by soon to really help with this but it's well worth running through those other options too.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Sorry about the confusion. I did not actually solve it. I just thought your answer was good enough and no one or not many people could really help much.

Tom, I got finale working right. I went on linuxquestions.org or http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/no-sound-with-wine-298777/. Then I went on http://frankscorner.org/index.php?p=mid. I read it, then followed the instructions. I installed TiMidity++ then I added a line to the timidity.c file inside the timidity folder.

It seems finale 2007 is the only one that works for me with TiMidity.

Hi :)

Thanks for the detail & the links there. :) Apols for the early congrats but it's great to hear you have sorted this out now :)))

Is Finale 2007 one that you already have? Have you been able to post something in the Wine Application database about how you got this working? Did you try other version numbers of Finale and not get any results?

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

I have Finale 2007. I have tried finale 2008, and finale reader 2009 with TiMidity with no success. I have not posted anything in the wine application database about this. I will try now.

I could happily try to add that info to Wine if you don't have the time but i think it would be more rewarding for you if you are able to do this. Also you might get feedback which might be useful. Anyway if you have the time then that would be great but if you don't then don't worry.
