Hi-jacking my email account?

Asked by Pratt

Is it possible for someone to hi-jack my email account? My emails are shown as being downloaded off the server, but then they don't appear in my inbox. It's as if they were being redirected somewhere else. Maybe I've done something silly with Ubuntu, (I'm a complete newbie to Linux) and I'm just wondering if I've broken evolution, but I'm not using the email package, in fact I'm back in the Windows Vista 'virus', until I've got some sort of understanding as to what I've done. I was messing about with the terminal window trying to fix my sound problem (I haven't any sound on my acer 8930g whatsoever) and unknowingly I may have done something stupid. I can send them, fine! I just can't see them to read them! I have installed firefox but I'm not sure how successful or secure that is, so it's quite possible that some idiot is having a peek at my mail, but unless I play with this b****y thing I'm never going to learn how to use it am I! I've tried the reinstall facility in synaptic, but it still didn't work.

I see it as some configuration problem with evolution, either try adding new account and try, or install Mozilla thunderbird.

Hi

Sounds like you have a few different issues to ask about separately
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

For sorting sound i would first work through each step in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

and if that hadn't sorted the sound then hopefully something early in one of these 2 guides might help
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

Firefox is very unlikely to have been compromised in such a way. Probably some settings are wrong in Evolution. Perhaps Junk or Spam settings are filtering everything out? I agree about switching to Thunderbird and making that your default application for email from the top taskbar click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

either search tool should find "thunderbird", just right click to install and then set it as you default by going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Preferences - Preferred Applications

Also i thought this guide might help as a quick reference guide for looking up odd things
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I removed my email account and opened a new one but that didn't work, I keep getting error messages on the bottom panel of Evo. The mail that I have in the inbox will not delete, the junk mail will not delete either. I have an "Error while Fetching mail" message in the bottom panel and an error message while trying to expunge any mail existing in any of the folders, it can't seem find the Trash folder. So I've made a right 'pigs ear' of it!

I think I'll try the Thunderbird option that you suggest, I was going to completely remove Evo in Synaptic and try to reinstall it, but it had a lot of other connected bits and pieces and I got a bit scared when all the red lines showed up in Synaptic, so I settled on the "mark for reinstallation option", but that was no good either! Is it possible to remove and reinstall Evolution mail without a lot of fiddling with the ubuntu setup?

I'll work through the helpful links you provided for me and I'll go from there. Many thanks for your time and effort. I won't put this as Problem Solved yet because my Evo package is still broke, what do you think?

Err, i wouldn't bother with uninstalling Evolution until you had a good go with Thunderbird (or/and Claws). as you've found Evolution is a bit stuck into the mx and trying to remove is something best left until sometime a lot later and only then if forced to. So, had you normal emails all gone to your junk folders by mistake then?

You are getting your emails in Thunderbird now?
