Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded?
Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?
Have you tested your RAM?

i am using the CD i have got from ubuntu site and it is working fine on other desktop PC.

and for RAM , i think xp ans vista os are working fine on my laptop. so it would be good.

Doesn't matter where you got the CD or the ISO, you should check it to make sure the ISO hasnt been garbaged in transit and that the burn has succeeded properly. Operating system install mediums are hugely sensitive to erroneos data and a bad install CD will yield a bad install experience.
The RAM test is a good thing to do just so that we know it is ok and is quite quick.
The system install has not worked so you must test everything you can to see if anything is fundamentally wrong. It is not sufficient to be complacemnt with the system if the install is not smooth.
If the CD and memory check out ok you can start looking at boot options and disabling hardware in the BIOS until you get an install.

Hi can you boot up the cd to the menu "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine"? If not this guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

So this machine is something like 1.5GHz cpu, 512Mb ram? Do you know how much hard-drive space is available for Ubuntu on it? Please let us know

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

yes , i can boot up the cd to the menu " Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine". But after that i am unable to go ahead if i select ubuntu install or any other option like use without installing.

hard drive space is very less for ubuntu it is around 10 GB . but it is not free available memory and i have allotted this memory as a part of window XP OS . But i am thinking i will format it ( driver with 10 GB space ) during installation process . But it is not going ahead from menu option.

Hi :)

It's usually better to get the LiveCd session working so that you can see how the working desktop looks on yur machine before wiping off the OS that does work at the moment, even if that is Windows ;)

So keep trying with the "Try Ubuntu without changes" option but this time try some boot-options
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
Hopefully just one or maybe a couple of these options will get you to the working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session"

Good luck with trying those
Regards from
Tom :)

It would be good to take Ap's advice and check the cd for defects and all that too.
Again regards from
Tom :)
