Just bought my panp5, sysem76. I need a mentor!

Asked by Steve Sapien

I'm an Ubuntu newbie. Switching from xp isn't bad, but some of the simple/basic things are hard to find in the forums or "help" guides. ( or I don't know the right words for the questions!). Example:

I cant find the setting for erasing my internet browsing history, junk files, and other whatever during each boot-up.
What are the mandatory start-up programs, and how do I streamline up that file?

What kind of security risks are associated with Linux, I was under the assumption that it was super safe. If not, what kind of daily maintenance can I do to protect my system?

Also, running some of the code in the terminal can be a bit nervy, as instructions are not always clear 'when to type', 'when to hit enter', or what to do if a mistake is made. I'm aware that there is no "undo" button in Ubuntu!

The browsing history thing is most important, but any help would be great.

Thanks

Also there are some guides here that might help

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

About security
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Internet-browser
Generally it's better to set your history to be deleted just after a session rather than just before starting one. To have a look at all the setting in firefox click on the "Edit" menu and choose "Preferences" and in there click on "Privacy" look at the bottom of that page to set the delete history type of setting. I would also change the advanced settings for java so that it can't resize the window. It might be worth doing a few other things there too.

About terminal commands
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Note that at the top of all these guides is a search tool which can be helpful sometimes or annoying at others, still mine only seems to suffer from user-error ;)

Also you might find this guide useful

Good luck and regards from
