can not get virtual box to register my usb or cd rom

Asked by Aquasita

i'm really new to ubuntu and have a question that has probably been asked before but the answer seemed like another language to me. i do need some help with getting virtual box to recognise my usb flash drive...it also doesnt seem to be registering my cd rom drive as well.
im running ubuntu 9.04 jaunty hosting win xp im trying my best to convert to ubuntu but seems to be a little more time consuming than i had hoped....but no reason to quit because even though i dont understand a whole lot i still love it more than the other OS...any help i could get with this would be appriciated. i just hope you can put it into noob terms for me 'cause i need it
thanx

Did you install the latest version of Virtualbox?

If not do this in a terminal.

Add this line. deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian jaunty non-free´ to your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Type this to do that. sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then the next step.

Enter this in a terminal.wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/sun_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Then run this command in the same terminal. apt-get install virtualbox-3.0

Follow the instructions on your screen. After this, reboot and try again. Let us know if it works or not. If not, we can look further...

Hi,

Then you should check if you are allowed to use Virtualbox.

Go to System - administration - Users and groups.

Unlock it if it is locked. Check your name and click the TAB user
rights. I think it´s called like that. I use a Dutch system.

There you´ll find some check boxes. Check if the Virtualbox section is
checked.

If it´s not checked, check it and everything should work fine.,

Just for the record.

You are running Ubuntu as your main OS. In Ubuntu you run Virtualbox and in Virtualbox you Run Windows...?

If you are running Virtualbox, you should be able to check and uncheck
any USB device you have. Works for me. If you run Virtualbox did you run
instell guest editions? I never used it before, but after installing it
I was very happy. It changed so much.

An other thing you can do is Uninstall Virtualbox and reinstall it.

Just download it directly from here. http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.0.4/virtualbox-3.0_3.0.4-50677_Ubuntu_jaunty_i386.deb

The non-free extention is just an extension. Don´t know why it´s there.

Can you help with this problem?
