Unable to logout as missing panels unresolved - also no access to email. Wonderful!

Asked by mikb

Recent Jaunty installation (updated) has suddenly hidden the bottom panel (toolbar effectively).

When the top panel was set to non-expanded and dragged to the screen bottom to see if this would achieve renewed mutual visibility, the opposite occured.

I now have neither panel. Somewhat cryptic computing environment ensues. Can't even logout or shutdown.

Please advise.

As a workround hotkeys for basic logging / closure functions would be useful prior to resolution of the "vanishing" panels.

To reset the panel to defaults, type this in a !terminal:

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

This will reset the panel to defaults.

Following brief reboot, last night (used PC's off button, which provoked selectable logout options dialog - panels still invisible) a single panel appeared on the top edge of the screen.

This had combined both original top panel and bottom panel items in a non-expanded form.

Expanded this successfully (top), used briefly and retired.

First thing this morning I still have the top panel, but now minus the previously integrated elements from the bottom panel.

This appears rather buggy behaviour. I had sought combination of 'top' and 'bottom' panels when moving the sole remaining panel down (see original report), when it vanished.

Reappearing combined, following reboot, at top position is not selected behaviour and the subsequent remodification likewise.

Thank you for suggested default reset suggestion.

I am quite an experienced user, although fairly new to the linux environment. Consequently I would appreciate pointers to DEFINE panels other than the obvious right click/properties dialog (when visible, of course!)

Regards,

Michael

Have now removed the ATI 3D driver installed for my card

This seems to have restored normal (default) panels - one top one bottom

However selectable screen resolution is unacceptable with a maximum of only 800 x 600

Is there a better driver available, tested for Ubuntu?

I was under the impression that the 3D version just disabled had been tested

Wish to run display at 1024x768 or better

Adapter and screen have no problems when booted to xp

You need to install the ATi driver. Without it you will not get the full benefit of your card.

The ATi issue is a seperate question. Please mark this as solved if it is so and create a new question for yur video issue.

There are no issues in Windows as the driver has been installed and configured.

ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver reinstalled and after some initial apparent graphical instability it seems to have settled down with top and bottom panels now visible.

I still think there has been some "buggy" behaviour with the panels using this driver.

However, so far so good.

Needless to say it is a matter of some concern that both "disappearances of panels" and apparent stability following deinstallation / reinstallation have happened without deliberate interventions.

Hopefully resolved (not sure how)
