dell demension 933 wont boot xubuntu from cd

Asked by johndaddy

downloaded xubuntu, changed boot setup to boot from cd, message: invalid disk in drive a. checked MD5... cd is burned correctly

Set boot to cd, changed cd from "live" to the older format and burned at slowest speed. still not being recognized by cmos to boot from on the dell.

Try changing ALL boot devices to CD. If you have multiple CD drives then try the other drive. Did you burn as slowly as you were allowed, this can improve compatibility

I want to follow this discussion so I'm posting an information request.
You say that the message error was "invalid disk in drive a?" Drive "a" should be your floppy drive. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I noticed it and thought I should comment.

Did you try setting ALL boot devices to be the CD drive? Do you have a floppy drive? If so, disable it in the BIOS just until you get installed.

I changed all boot devices to cd drive after the dell tries to boot it seems to default internally to the floppy, yes I have a floppy. I also have an original software disk that when I place it in the drive it asks if I want to boot from the hard disk or cd drive. when I select cd it states that the driver is being supplied... Yes I have a floppy. how do I disable the BIOS?

Sorry Yes I disabled the floppy, my son thinks it might not read iso files, I think it may need a driver for the drive to run during boot. still not sure what to do.

Did you burn the ISO file to the disk as an ISO file only on the disk or did you open the ISO file with your burner which woiuld then create the bootable CD. You do not

1. Extract the data, then burn it
2. Write one file (the ISO) to the disk.

If you use Nedro (for example) right click the file -> open with
then select nero.exe

selected "open" with the hp "power to go" program on my hp. burned it to disk, one file iso on disk. copied disk to my mac, copied the files, all but 3-4 "insuficient authorization" files... burned files to disk. cell still cant run it, no problem windows disk, or the drive after boots windows, with any other disk.

so if you view the disk in a file browser (Any OS will do), do you see lots of files or only one?
