Karmic: Update or clean install?

Asked by Athani

I was using Win XP when I also installed Jaunty. It's a dual boot system now. Then I upgraded to Karmic Aplha 3. I will continue to update to the subsequent alpha's, the beta and the RC. But would it be advisable to "upgrade" to the final release of Karmic or should I perform a clean install? What are the pro's and con's of each? Thanks.

Also, if I were to perform a clean install, is there a way to back up my current ubuntu software? I haven't got a very fast Internet connection, you see?

I think you must keep your Karmik updated/upgraded and you will get the final release as i always do with all develop release...

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for the answer. But I wanted to know if there were any benefits of a
clean install. Thanks.

I can perhaps comment about an update versus a new install of Crunchbang Linux (an Ubuntu derivative).

8.10 used lxpanel as the bottom bar, which had certain qualities. I updated 8.10 to 9.04 by changing the sources list. It kept lxpanel.

I did a new install of 9.04 on another computer. 9.04 used tint2 as the bottom bar - and it had different qualities. So that installed tint2.

An update will give you an update of the packages which are installed, but it will not install new packages which might be on the new install.

(Complicated or what?)

Please read http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha3 release note... with new features... (ext4, grub2 etc.) a clean install will be installed with them.

An upgrade of from a Ubuntu 9.04 release system require some additional steps to get the almost the same working system (i mean with the same install defaults of Ubuntu 9.10).

To get maximum speed from ext4 file system is better to reinstall it from scratch.

Hope this helps

Thanks. Suppose I clean install the Karmic final release, can I first
back-up installed packages so I don't have to download them again?

If you´re not part of the test team, Why install it now? Just wait for the RC. Everything will be fine after that.

No worries.

Ubuntu allways knows the answers.

Just install all upgrades... after all you will have the final at the release date. (or even some days before)

But be aware that there might every day new glitches but also solutions in those Alfa-versions...
So stay tuned with:
