Embedding Ubuntu

Asked by Ken Teo

Hi,
I have installed Ubuntu 6.10 successfully. But I wonder does canonical Ltd provides any CD-ROM installer for a strapped down version or embedded version of Ubuntu 6.10 or other versions so that I can minimize disk space and maximize runtime speed of those programs which are required. Just like embedded win XP or embedded Win CE or other embedded OS. Where can I find step by step instructions how to do it?

Thanks.
Ken

I think true embedded ubuntu is on the horizon.

"The first pre-alpha release of UME (ubuntu mobile and embedded) is expected to accompany the 7.10 ("Gutsy Gibbon") release of Ubuntu in October. Commercial availability of MID hardware, meanwhile, is slated for 2008." From http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7778150149.html

However, if you just want a basic install you can download the alternate CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and check the box for alternate CD) and do a server install. It's about the same process as installing regular ubuntu you just don't get a GUI and certainly fewer packages. If you want a lightweight GUI try xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/.

As for instructions, this site (http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/) has some good info. It's titled dual boot but he also goes over the alternate CD. I think you can safely ignore the parts about dual booting if you don't need that.

Hi Ken,
You may also just use the server install cd which is all text mode if you want it to. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download is also the place where to get it. Install a minimal system and go ahead by using apt-get install and there you go...
