[karmic 9.10] How to get KeyShortcuts working

I don't get these keys working on ubuntu karmic:

alt+f2
alt+f1
...

They are set in ubuntus personal keyboard config...

     Under "System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts" there is a list you can use to configure.
