How to install HP K80 with Dapper Drake

Asked by Alwin Stupp

Running Dapper Drake with XP in parallel. Dapper Drake runs fine but printing is a problem. Dapper Drake System recognices HP K80 printer. Recommended printer
program HPLIP 0.9.7. Program selected . Sending testpage to printer.....but nothing happens.
Under "hplip.siourceforge.net/install/manual/manual/distros/ubuntu/.html" found page "HP Linux Imaging and Printing. Downloaded "HPLIP 1.7.4a.run" to my desktop.
Followed the shown instruction steps 1 to 5. In between I enabled univers and multivers repositories. Console ended with: My username ubuntu :~$ . Thats it. But I
cannot open HPLIP 1.7....Prompt reads something like "home>username> desktop>hplip 1.1.4a.run could not be opend. The character coding could not be identified.
Make sure that you are not trying to open with a binary file. " Displayed coding is "UTF 8".

However, ubuntu continues refusing to recognise "HPLIP 1.7.4a.run" and to print the Testpage.

As a newby to ubuntu I feel totally lost. Maybe sombody is willing to help.......would highly appreciate....

Alwin

Hello,

hplip is already installed by default on Dapper, you don't need to download or install anything.

Because you installed a newer version of hplip, you should go back to the version supported by ubuntu, please type this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get remove hplip
sudo apt-get install hplip

Then the default method to install HP printers on Dapper is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HpPrinterInstallationAndMaintenanceDapper

You can ask other questions here if that don't solve your problem.

Although, on console level , I got the massage that something was critical with the X-server. Despite I continued to follow the instuctions of the page you recommended.
And all of a sudden the testpage was printed. Now it is working paralell to XP. That's
great fun, many , many thanks for your support...

have a nice weekend
