ubuntu 9.04 locks up all the time

New installation, ubuntu 9.04 alongside xp but it locks up all the time. Just holding cursor over icon locks it. Machine in question does not have internet connection.

Does your Windows XP ever lock up?

Does it work correctly in safe mode? There is an option to use a safe mode when Ubuntu boots.

XP very reliable, never locks up.

Were you able to install Ubuntu or is this the live CD?

You should be able to find the safe mode (ie recovery mode) at the very beginning of the startup.

What kind of hardware do you have?

Lowering Display resolution allows it to run for longer.
I think Linux not for me.
