nautilus doesn't do thumbnail preview of audio&video files

Asked by Tomi Urankar

In Nautilus when I am in ICON mode it doesn't do thumbnail previews for video files and also when the mouse hovers over an MP3 it doesn't play music.

I tried both TOTEM-XINE, TOTEM-GSTREAMER since from what I have read U need TOTEM to be able to view video files as thumbnails in Nautilus. I have xinelibs, gstreamer 0.10(all codecs), ffmpeg, mpg123, mpg321, vorbis-tools installed.

I also did 'rm ~/.thumbnails' and then did 'killall nautilus' but it still will not bring me thumbnails for videos.

The movies are between 100 and 700mbs in size so that shouldn't be a problem. And also I can play all of the video in TOTEM so it isn't a codec issue.

What else can I do?

I attach a NAUTILUS config screeni:

ps. I've already asked this in LP bug report but they said I should ask here.

Hello,

Try to go back to the default theme and see if you still have this problem.

In nautilus. Edit, Preferences, Preview tab. Does it say "Local Files Only" for everything? Also, I assume these files are local and not on some remote smb/ssh/ftp share?

I have totem-xine and ubuntu-restricted-extras packages that helped the preview here. Does it work under another username? Maybe we can narrow it to a profile problem as opposed to system-wide.

The nautilus settings are explained in this pic:

I tried creating a new useraccount but preview still wont work. Yes the files are local.

Maybe, you must increase the longest long file to preview.

And you must use gsreamer (totem-gstreamer).
If the preview need more long time to get it, then nautilus don't show it

Antonio
Where do I change the longest long file preview?

I already am using totem-gstreamer with all the neccesary codecs.

In nautilus
Edit -> Preferences
Set preview tab, and then watch some like:
Other previewers files:
(sorry, I can say the exact words because I am using the Spanish Version)

A already tried all of the settings in Nautiluss' preferences and none seem to work.

Just out of curiosity I installed a fresh Feisty into VMWARE and there video preview of the same video files worked without a problem.

ps. What about the issue that MP3 files are not played when I hover over the mouse in Nautilus? Could the 2 issues (video thumbnail preview not working, MP3 files will not play when I hover over the mouse) be connected?

I have the same problem, but for some reason nautilus generates thumbnails when i run it as root. Also Nautilus generates thumbnails only for mpg extensions, but if i rename a .wmv or .avi to .mpg it generates the thumbnail instantly.

Sorry to double post. I remember i was not able to play avi videos with Totem, i deleted the .xine folder (/home/user/.xine) and video worked again. Now i rename any video and it refreshes/draws the thumbnail (it was not a filetype problem).

This doesn't work for me nor does it show thumbnails if I am browsing as root.

Andreas
Here is a tip so U will not have to renambe the videos in order for nautilus to refresh them:
"rm -rf ~/.thumbnails"
which deletes the cached thumbnails and restarts the count.

To setup audio preview within gnome and nautilus you’ll want to install the following using your favorite package manager or command line:

    sudo aptitude install mpg321 vorbis-tools

These simple packages should give you audio preview when you rest your mouse on an audio file. It should

How installing 'mpg321 vorbis-tools' could help? I don't see any connection.

It've just dawned on me. What if 'killall nautilus' would help? Because I didn't have codecs installed before starting GNOME and nautilus.

My video preview was fixed by installing totem-gstreamer instead totem-xine.
