atheros 9k wireless ubuntu

Asked by Billet75

I just bought a new HP DV3-2155mx. I was able to get the wireless card to see my network but it does not connect using WAP. I searched google and use the backports steps to get that functionality to work. Now here's the crazy part it knocks off all my other wireless devices. Let me know if you have any suggestions -Thx for the help -Billet

Can you please provide:

sudo lshw -C network; lspci

Maybe you can use a different driver, or need some module options.

Thanks

I have tried the command below before posting the issue. I also edited the /etc/apt/service.list (removed the # so the it would allow apt-get to get the package, I could be wrong on the exact path ) After doing so the wireless card did see the network but was unable to connect. At the same moment all my other devices were knocked off my wireless network, it had issue with WAP. I would like to update the ubuntu 9.0.4 kernel to 2.6.29 as I read 2.6.30 is really in a beta stage. I do not know how to update the kernel. Please provide instructions. If there is a ISO image for ubuntu 9.0.4 64 bit that contains the new kernel I am fine with reinstalling. Please provide a URL we I can download it. Thx for your help -Billet

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

you can get a new kernel with sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

if that yields no difference you will need to find a repo for the -30 kernel which may help

If I still have issues, could you recommend a USB wireless adaptor that would work straight out of the box? I have another labtop as well in which I can never got wireless to work. I have made all the other functionality I require work. I hate windows but I need wireless. -Thx for your help M

If you need to jump up to a newer kernel/the latest stable you could always use KernelCheck.

Here's some info from their page:

"KernelCheck is a graphical user interface program designed to make the kernel-compiling process as easy as the click of a button. A kernel is the base of any operating system – in our case, the Linux operating system. KernelCheck will fetch the latest information from http://www.kernel.org, which hosts the source packages for the Linux kernel, and ask the user which one they would like to compile into a .deb package (with the option of installing the kernel after the compilation). This automated process is a fork of AutoKernel by Robert Wolterman (xtacocorex), Timothy Janssen (mentok), and Kristof Verbeken (PingunZ). KernelCheck is currently licensed under the GNU Public License version 3.
Current Features

    * Ability to download, compile and install latest kernel automatically
    * Ability to compare latest kernel information with your current running kernel
    * GUI designed with Glade provides easy accessibility for any user

Supported Platforms
At the moment, KernelCheck is only supported on Debian-Based platforms. Some of these include Debian, Ubuntu (or any derivatives), Mint, etc. RPM and Slackware based are planned to be supported in the future. "

I've used it for Mepis and Ubuntu without fail since I needed it for both the Atheros 5 and 9k and some other goodies.

Here's the site: http://kcheck.sourceforge.net/about.html

Hope this helps somehow.
