Why packages.ubuntu.com does not respond?

Asked by erlguta

In the last months i can see that packages.ubuntu.com does not respond at all or load very very slow (several minutes).

What is happening?.

It gives a very bad impression of a project as Ubuntu, having one of the most important web searching tools to do not work at all.

See e,.g, the discussion there http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=133803 .

What is happening is that servers are overloaded, in particular when a new release comes in.

Why it is happening is because there are probably not enough servers and not enough bandwidth, both cost a lot of money.

A possibility is to setup your distribution to download packages from a mirror server, and not from the official server.

Thank you. But i think that Ubuntu should resolve this. Debian with less money and resources do not have this problem in packages.debian.org
Canonical should solve this problem with financial resources if necessary, because this is very useful web resource.

Arnaudus, that URL you gave doesn't really answer the question. archive.ubuntu.com is not packages.ubuntu.com. We're not seeing a release, the mirrors are working fine and with good speed for me. But the website http://packages.ubuntu.com is flakey. This is a recent phenomen and has nothing to do with the year-old forum link you posted.
