Can't wake Jaunty 9.04 out of hibernation.

Asked by Randymanme

I hibernated Jaunty 9.04 (firefox 3.5) Saturday night and can't get it to wake up. I've turned it off at the tower, turned it off and unplugged it; no change. It's as if I broke it by clicking on "hibernate," instead of "shut down."

I'd thought that maybe I posed this problem earlier. I did on some other sites. I read about bug #229806, but I've no idea what to do with that information. Switching it all the way off and rebooting doesn't effect any change -- it just goes back to a black screen and unresponsive keyboard. I'm not at home (because my computer don't work anymore); I'm hoping to get THE answer before I go home.

You may need to clear the NV RAM. Keep the power unplugged out for at least an hour, then try reattatching and powering on. If not then you may need to remove the CMOS battery as well as the power and disconnect the monitor (power first so you don't damae your system). And leave it out for an hour or so. This will drain all power from it as the CMOS battery keeps the settings while the system is "off", then reattatch everything. On bootup the CMOS will moan that it is loading default settings. You should then apply your settings and the system should boot.

Hibernate is a PITA to get setup in Linux. I've tried a few times and only had a success because it worked out of the box on an Acer Aspire One.

Please bear with me ('cause I'm kinda dumb). what's the NV RAM and CMOS battery? Where do I find the latter?

I've some other questions/problems -- should I asked them no or go to a more appropriate forum?

jeez you gave me 25 mins to reply on a forum, thanks....

NV RAM is on of the storage of errors on the system. If this gets full you'll get no bootup at all. By clearing this off it will hopefully get a boot.

The CMOS battery is a big watch battery about half an inch in diameter on the motherboard itself. It is how your computer remoembers the date and time when the system is off. If you unplug your vcr and plug it back in it forgets the time and flashes 12:00 doesn't it...thats what the battery is there to prevent.

Maybe someone can suggest a more graceful method to resolve.

What happens when you hit the power button on the system?

Hi

It's better to keep each question on it's own thread so you can see what advice is being given about each topic without it all being one great long muddle
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

You can post as many questions as you like and we often find that one person might post 4 or so different questions and then completely vanish for month or years or completely. Most problems happen during install and early on in the user migrating from Windows to linux as things are quite different. Most of us didn't have experience of installing an OS before trying Ubuntu (i did but that's unusual) - Windows is mostly pre-installed by a team of experts doing batch runs on a lot of identical machines all in one go. Each set of hardware has it's own quirks and mostly Ubuntu just installs fine even when done by technophobic noobs on a variety of strange hardware. Sometimes it's not so easy tho.

We are here to help and if something is better sent to another forum we will hopefully let you know which forum and give you a link. Hopefully we can solve it here tho :)

As you are new to Ubuntu you might find working through this worksheet helps sort all your multimedia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
(or at least almost all) in one easy go. You might have other trouble to fix first tho? I tend to go with non-free components but when i know more about it i hope to switch to fully OpenSource before some codec manufacturer asks me to pay anything (if that ever happens). Also this link might help you migrate but this one is only for looking things up in, not like the last one which needed working through step-by-step
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

They say unplugging the machine and pressing 5-10 times the On/Off button is equal to unplugging and waiting the stat to drain.
If you are on a laptop unplug AND remove the battery, wait for a while and push the battery back.
