NVIDIA version 180

Asked by Roy

Hi

I am a new user to Ubuntu. Actually a new use to Linux totally. I install Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop. (Acer 5738). It has a built in NVIDIA graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce G105M). I installed Ubuntu and then was looking at the different things i can do in the new OS. I wanted to enable Visual effect and it asked me to enable my graphics card. When i tried to do that, it asked for an upgrade to version 180.(by default. didn't give me any choice). After the install, when i rebooted my system, I see 6 desktop screens . I mean the screen was divided into 6. (3 on each side) I can use the system but its very small and again ...has 6 screens...Then, when i remove the driver and reboot, everything seems fine but i'm unable to enable my graphics card. Can ANYONE PLEASE HELP??????

As i said i am new to this...so if ask me provide any details or logs messages....pls let me know how to do it.

Hi. I don't have any answer, just wanted to stress that the problem has been reported several times in the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1158836 for instance). So: you're not alone. However, I cannot find any bug reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 . The kubuntu wiki page also reports "everything OK with NVDIA drivers". Would you feel like filling a bug report?

I tried to follow those threads....but none worked....I mean there is no confirmed resolution for it....I also checked the same problem on the web....and I also found many people who are facing such issues......But none who got it resolved..
Still need help on the same. I don't know whether its a bug or no....Should I file a bug report ??? If yes ...how and how will it help ???

Hi,

Note that I stated that "I don't have any answer". My point was that the problem you are facing is real, and that it seems difficult to fix (at least, it's difficult to find someone who managed to get it fixed).

It's clearly a bug: you follow the logical steps and it does not work, this is a bug. Now, I don't know if the bug is serious or not; these driver issues can be extremely complicated.

Reporting the bug will help Ubuntu to improve the distribution; that's how free software works: you get it for free, and you're welcome to participate to the improvement of it. If you're lucky, a developer can propose a workaround to fix the bug, but you don't have to expect anything out of the bug report except helping the community to improve the software. Here is a tutorial: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Filing%20a%20bug%20with%20ubuntu-bug .

Now, for your specific problem: note that the bug is annoying (especially if you were planning to play some 3D-games), but not blocking: as far as I understand, Ubuntu works well if you're not trying to use 3D effects. So you can "use your graphic card" for everything like surfing the web, playing 2D games, watching videos etc.

Can you help with this problem?
