Upgrade from Ubuntu to Edubuntu

Asked by Denis L.

I'm a newb to Linux, and have installed the recent ver of Unbuntu using Wubi. So far so good. I'm told that I can maybe upgrade to Edubuntu(I work in the IT dept of a school district) without having to uninstall and start over. Is that possible?

You can do it also with Add/Remove or Synaptic Manager.

But try the actionparsnip way - there's more fun.
To do it open terminal with Applications-->Accessories-->Terminal, paste there the line and hit Enter. You'll be asked for your user password and when you are typing it you will see nothing, it's normal. Hit again Enter sit back and watch the system working;-)

It would probably be better to upgrade to a stable install of Ubuntu first. The Wubi is designed as a demo version of Ubuntu and really isn't made for long-term use. So either use part 8 of section 8 in this guide
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

Alternatively just install Edubuntu properly by putting it's cd in the cd/dvd-drive and reboot the machine, this should get you to a menu that has a default option "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine", if you don't get to that then this guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Using the "Try Ubuntu ... " should get you to a working desktop that we call a "LiveCd session", if it works. It's a good way of testing the version you have to make sure it works well on your machine. Most versions of linux have this functionality. *buntus usually find your internet connection straight-away allowing you to surf into here or elsewhere via firefox. If you find you're happy with it then installing like this would give you a proper linux system and provide a much more robust dual-boot system that works well with Windows
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I have to say that i think the first option probably has the most merit now that i've looked at Edubuntu a bit but it might be good to try the LiveCd of Edubuntu first just to see how different it is.

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Why is wubi being mentioned. The wubi part of the system is not at fault and ubuntu is working fine. All the question asks is how to add a seperate DE. The previous post confused me, I'd hate to see what it does to Denis

I used the Add/Remove function and found the Edubuntu add ons I was looking for. I installed them OK.
Thanks for the help!
