Jaunty gives '$ HOME/.dmrc file being ignored' after booting

Asked by RayArdia

Jaunty on Acer laptop, all was well until I tried to connect to wifi in my son's home.
Ubuntu 9.04 does boot but I can't connect to wireless and my audio system, eg. when trying to use skype, doesn't work properly.
Have tried 'sudo chmod 644 /home/username/.dmrcsudo chmod 644 .dmrc to no avail, ie it just returns to username@xxxLaptop:~$
What should I try next please?

chmod doesn't give you more output, if it were successful.

Thanks for your reply Sebastian, and I think you mean that even though
chmod doesn't give any output it may well have worked.
Doesn't seem to have done anything at all. Error message still the same
when I restart.

ls -la $HOME/.Xauthority
ls -la $HOME/.dmrc

each
-rw------- 1 username username

##my .dmrc has 600
However gid and uid e.g. 1000 should be the user
id
grep 1000 /etc/passwd

chown 1000:1000 /home/username/.dmrc
chmod 644 /home/username/.dmrc

Thanks Sam. Followed up to 'ls -la $HOME/ .dmrc', output was as below:-

ray@RayLaptop:~$ ls -la $HOME/ .Xauthority

Should I now enter 'each

Is ##my .dmrc the next instruction?
Sorry to be so dim!
Your help much appreciated.

Audio:
You may search for your audio modul here (via terminal):
zless /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz

##or you may prefer to unpack the file.

Options found can be added at the end of the file
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

e.g.
snd-hda-intel model=acer

you can open it with:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Backup the file before edit:
cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.backup

After finishing save+close the file, reboot.

You may find the codec, e.g. Realtek 883 in alsamixer at the top left, when you type in a terminal:
alsamixer

There you may also test all setting options available.
A GUI for this tool is: gnome-alsamixer

Ray, you did a greate job already. So far it looks good to me.

There don't seem to be much options for ALC268 and ICH9 familiy (line #730)
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt#730

except what I've suggested already - to add model=acer - described in my earlier post.
Recall:
Step #1
Backup the file before edit:
sudo cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.backup

Step #2
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Step #3
at the end of the file add this line:

snd-hda-intel model=acer

##save+close the file, reboot.

Skype:
It's common that pulseaudio and skype together cause trouble.
Please try to follow these suggestions:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#Skype

Another common thing about sound is trial&error, because of different architectures, soundcards a.s.o.
There is no one_solution for all method, hence you need to test configurations and certainly unmute at least pcm, master and external amplifier.

Hi Sam,
Now in UK for a few days, hence delay in responding to your helpful
comments.
Regret 'no joy' to report, failed at step one:-

ray@RayLaptop:~$ sudo
cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.backup
cp: cannot stat `/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base': No such file or directory
ray@RayLaptop:~$ gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
ray@RayLaptop:~$
The alsa-base (/etc/modprobe.d) - gedit window has a tab named alsa-base
but is otherwise completely blank. May I ask for a little more help on
this one please?

Re Pulse-audio and Skype.

Ancient brain not able to follow the complications of the link you
pointed me to - sorry!
Do I really need to use Pulse-audio at all. What about if I uninstall
both Pulse and Skype and use Ekiga instead?

With best wishes, Ray

Ray,
seems the file name has changed in Jaunty. (I'm on Hardy)
According to some search it's:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

To verify, you may check the path via Nautilus or terminal.
This will show you the content of the folder:
ls -al /etc/modprobe.d/

If you've found an alsa-base.conf, then just repeat mentioned steps with this one.
sudo cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.backup
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

> gedit window has a tab named alsa-base but is otherwise completely blank.
##and yes, if a file doesn't exist it will be created, just skip it.

btw. here is someone with ALC268 [unsolved]

>Do I really need to use Pulse-audio at all.

Ray, ALSA is default, pulseaudio needs ALSA, not the other way around.

Ray, it's about freedom of choice and whatever suits your comfort.
You may try all options which come to your mind, everything can be removed, reinstalled, configured ...

Ray,
if you mention your age once again you'll have to reveal it, because I'm likely older - and - in advantage female. I started with computer when I was 40 and that's a long time ago. :-))

Finally you've got it right, you've missed the empty space '#' (symbol added as pointer)
cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf#/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.backup
Congratulations.

after the line 'options snd-pcsp index=-2'?

Yes, at the end of the file.
And don't worry, the worst thing what could happen to your sound is that nothing happens, means no change.

Hi Sam,
71,male,married,resident 'Green Spain'. Younger than you or not, I'm
still getting a message on Skype saying that I have audio problems.
Skype doesn't work, neither does Ekiga. Have uninstalled Ekiga, still
the same but now no warning about 'not being the owner of /Home'
Am very appreciative of your help,
Regards, Ray

##O.T.
Ray, my deepest respect and well, I lost my bet.
Sorry, since I don't use skype you may search a little if and how others solved the issues.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu

Anyway, you should open a new question for the issue with skype and sound.
It makes it easier for others to follow up or find a solution for themselves.

Hence, if the '.dmrc file' issue is solved, please mark the question solved also.

From what I've read so far, in section 'Audio devices' automatic sound preferences shouldn't be set.
And 'plughw' should be set, instead of 'hw'.
Skype actually uses ALSA, so in your system audio settings everything should be set to ALSA too.
If using PulseAudio, then all other audio settings need to be set to PulseAudio too.

In general, sound settings need to be consistent.

Sam, Skype still won't work but will sort it out by asking a new question, thank you for trying to help.
The .dmrc matter is still there! Whenever I start the laptop still get this:-

'Users $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default system and languages from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. Users $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by others.'

I have checked that the System Sound settings are all on ALSA, but could it be that because of the .dmrc issue these are not being saved, and are therefore still on the Vista defaults (Vista was preloaded when laptop was bought.)

Screenshot of sound settings:- Sorrry, now can't show the screenshot, Alt+Take screenshot gives me the .png file (on desktop) but can't seem to copy and paste it here.

Please COMPLETELY IGNORE my last comments. On re-reading I can see that I have mixed up at least two, possibly three threads. It would be preferable to start two new questions. This I will do!
Very grateful for your patient help Sam.
