What video file have you tried to view? What extension does it (they) have?

If you are trying to view a commercial/encrypted DVD you need to add the Medibuntu Repository...

( instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu . Note that you have to do two things 1) add Repository and 2) get GPG key )

...and add: libdvdcss2

Generally have a look at "Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto " onhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683
