Did you try the VLC player which includes its codecs to read the video files ?

BTW, you double post your question.. that's bad ;)

VLC Player also unable to open video file. While a 3gpp video file dragged and dropped into the player's playlist, it shows a message that asys "no essential decoder module found".
What should I do now? Can't I play video files any more?

Hi,

Have you installed the 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' package, that contains many codecs which cannot be distributed with Ubuntu for legal reasons?

I have installed "ubuntu-restricted-extra" package i.e. "gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" plugin. After that thye player react same as before. Nothing changed i.e. suddenly closing while trying to play any video file.

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu install skype googleearth acroread and other stuffs using Medibuntu

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the universe and multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]

enable "Community-maintained Open Source software ( universe )"
enable "Proprietary drivers for devices ( restricted )"
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"

Close and confirm the repository reload.

Type the following command in a terminal (applications → accessories → terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc smplayer mplayer

To get better dvd playback and optional packages here the medibuntu available software list http://packages.medibuntu.org/
you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
( here the medibuntu howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu but see below )

In short please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type or copy and paste:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/`lsb_release -cs`.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list; sudo apt-get -q update; sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring; sudo apt-get -q update

-- give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter

Now to install, type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2 regionset gnome-mplayer
sudo aptitude install non-free-codecs w32codecs gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
sudo aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You can also install other Medibuntu repository provided optional software http://packages.medibuntu.org/ :

sudo aptitude install skype
sudo aptitude install googleearth
sudo aptitude install acroread

Hope this helps

Which video card and driver:
lshw -C video

Check system administration -> hardware driver
if the correct driver is checked.

In case grep errors in Xorg.0.log:
grep -i error /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Test case, start a prefered app in a terminal e.g.:
vlc
reproduce the steps until the issue occurs, note the time and take a look in the logfiles.

Which Ubuntu:

Did you made a search for your problem e.g. vlc BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) ?

I have found some forum threads with the same problem :
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=104445
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=32259

In short, you seem to have a problem with your video output settings. The solution seems to be to set the output to X11.

From the links above for VLC :
"go to Settings>Preferences>Video>>Output Modules. Tick the Advanced Options and set Video output module to X11 video output. Save your settings and restart your application"
or
start VLC in a terminal using "vlc --vout x11"

Hope that can help, the same should be possible to do with other video players.

look......
let him know that both of us same kind of problem that still have no appropriate answer.
This could be a big problem to a number of users of UBUNTU. A lot of things which made UBUNTU most superior from the other operating systems. But a os has to be it's minimum requirements. I am sure that soon CANONICAL LTD. would find a crack to this problem.
Faithfully, I got now a greater knowledge of a amazing thing which can potentialities to turn over of many unsolved questions. Although my luck did not match with the time but Ubuntu is a very helpful thing to the students.
You tried a lot for me Tom. Sorry, that did'nt worked at last.
I am always waiting for all of your suggestions....
keep them sending to me....

Maybe you could try another distribution of Linux if you enjoy its ethos.

I personally started on redhat 5 then moved quickly to Mandrake 6 (before it was Mandriva). Fedora is a decent release too. There is more to Linux than Ubuntu.

Tom (tom6) said :

Mandriva is beautiful and well worth trying
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mandriva
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=fedora

There's also openSUSE, CentOS and others
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=opensuse
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=centos

Did you install Ubuntu as part of a dual-boot system? If so then you already know enough to explore adding one of the above, or perhaps a different version of linux (we call them distros, short for "distributions"). Quite a few people have a multi-boot system with 1 or 2 distros and a version of Windows so that they can choose which they want to boot into when they switch their machine on. The command-line and a lot of the commands are exactly the same in almost all the different distros and often the desktop gui has many similarities too - until you customise it ;)

It seems that Sam, ActionParsnip, Marcobra and others did a lot more work in this thread and i was glad to find it because i was completely stuck in the other thread and this one seemed to have a lot more proper linux knowledge in the answers :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

No it's not me, it's this outrages Hardy LTS, for me the best distri and motivation ever, until 10/2010 ;-)

Md. Sahadat ullah,
so now, video works fine, but no sound, correct? That would be a success you achieved already.

Please install gnome-alsamixer via Synaptic, this is the GUI (graphical_user_interface) for alsamixer which can be started in a terminal also by typing:
alsamixer

Set at least master, pcm, external amplifier unmuted and then go with trial&error, means unmute successive other available options and test your prefered app with it.

In system preferences -> audio
choose automatically or ALSA or your sound card module and press the test buttons to see what works best.

Please keep in mind there is no one_for_all method solution because of a variety of architectures, soundcards and so on.

nothing changed.........
suggest for further steps........
Please tell me the first settings of audio which could be found after just installing UBUNTU in any computer that which produces sound, preferably as my computer architecture.
Please.......

First steps could be to unmute anything in 'gnome-volume-control', speaker symbol on the panel, right click to get a context menu.
ALSA architecture is common. Audio settings (system preferences) should be consistent with e.g. gnome-volume-control.
Usually sound card and other devices are recognized automatically and modules are loaded.
