Unable to install Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Rob Frerejean

I am unable to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop. I tried try first and then Install, but I get this message.

[2.516026] ATA1: softreset failed ( device not ready )

modprobe:FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

modprobe:FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Loading, please wait...

BusyBox v1.10.2 ( Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2ubuntu7 ) Build-in shell (ash)

Enter ´help´ for a list of build-in commands.
(initramfs)

I don´t know what to do here.

PS: I am already running Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop, but had to install 8.04 first and do distro upgrade to get to 9.04

ATA1: softreset failed ( device not ready ) makes it appear that your cd-rom is not set to boot mode or some other ata device is....not ready

It´s a clean install.

The ATA message has nothing to do with starting from CD or USB stick. It has always been there. No problems there.

hmm, well ATA1 is some sort of drive or card drive, so I figured that was , the problem. have you gone into your BIOS and set your system to boot from cd (assuming this clean install is coming from a cd/and/orDVD?. And is this on a lappy or a desktop?

Everything is set to start from CD. It´s my standard setting in my BIOS.

And it´s on my laptop.

Im sorry im not sure then, I would try and burn the disk again, you did burn the contents of the iso to the cd and not the iso file itself right? (I know it may sound silly , but its a common mistake)

Try booting cd in safe graphics mode. If it doesn't work download an alternate image. You can follow guide in getting started section of linux.host22.com.

The CD is oke. I used it on an other system as well. So no problem
there. I even created a USB stick with the installer. No success. Same
message.

Please try to add this boot kernel parameter

all_generic_ide

using first boot menu screen (press F6) of the live cd installation menu.

Hope this helps

After pressing F6 a menu pops up and it says.....

Expert mode
acpi=off
noapic
nolapic
edd=on
free software only

Hi :)

Is "Expert mode" an actionable choice? (sorry, i've been watching 24 too much)

I think what Marcobra meant was that when you have pressed F6, you add the line
all_generic_ide
to the list.

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
