Where does Rhythmbox get its CD info?

Asked by Bob Jonkman

Where does Rhythmbox get its CD info?

I have a newly released CD that shows everythings as "unknown", so I'd like to enter artist, title, track info &c into the DB. There is no tool in Rhythmbox to do this; nor any info in the Help files about what database it usually pulls the CD info from.

Bob,
If I understand your question correctly, you have imported some songs into rhythmbox and the columns displayed for "Genre", "Artist", "Album", "Year" (which columns are shown exactly to you are set by the "Visible Columns" preference option) etc. display "Unknown".

It's actually very easy to edit this metadata in rhythmbox: simply right-click on the song, go to "Properties" click on the "Basic" tab, and edit the "Title", "Artist", and other rows you see. You can even highlight several songs from the same album at once to update an album at a time. If album art doesn't display after you've entered this information, you can drag and drop an image into the lower-left corner of rhythmbox where album art normally displays.

I believe there is support in rhythmbox for pulling song metadata automatically using a service called "musicbrainz", but I'm not sure how you enable this support.

Good luck
Josh

I've updated the properties for the songs on my computer, but I want to update the online database so that others will benefit too. But I don't know what online database Rhythmbox uses, and there must be one because other CDs are automatically recognized. There's a CDDB plugin that I have enabled, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Bob,
For ensuring that your CD's information gets propagated to various online music metadata databases, I'd suggest the following starting points:

 * http://www.freedb.org/en/faq.3.html#21
 * http://musicbrainz.org/doc/How_Editing_Works

Can you help with this problem?
