sudo password prob in migration from another gnu&linux

Asked by Lilwiz

While logged in as a user, I cannot install updates. Even though I know the root password and enter it when prompted the updater says it is incorrect. Ran into the same issue installing the flash player. I am an experience unix sys admin, and have run Fedora for some years. What's wrong here?

Also, I cannot login to the gui desktop as root. That also says 'Wrong Password'

you should enter your own password, not root's. updater uses sudo.
It took a while to get used to it, coming from slackware.

True. Just switched from FC2 myself, and after research found that Ubuntu disables root by default. They want you to use 'sudo' instead. There IS a way to change this behavior, but I just stuck with it and got used to 'sudo' with my user password. Works same from there.

I hope this helps for other issues. I think it's just for dipping into rather than grokking
