I do not understand. Did you complete an install then need to know the next step or has the install process given you an error you don't understand?

I am unaware of a 'red cd' but know 7.10 is Gutsy Gibbon which in no longer supported. I suggest you download a Jaunty Jackalope ISO (9.04) which is fully supported

Please clarify

It might be possible to upgrade to 8.04 and then perhaps on to 9.04 but 8.04 is still supported until 2010. 7.10 is no longer supported so you really need to upgrade in order to be able to install program or really enjoy the full use of Ubuntu. It is likely to need quite a large download though so you might prefer to just use the system you have but order the free cd of 9.04 from Shipit. These take a couple of months to arrive but 7.10 should be usable for web-browsing, office apps, cd/dvd burning and so on until then

Good luck and regards from

Not same!
first think first, carefull! it can be problem, make you busy then black screen you see nothing, ever almost button disabled. first think step, i try to find notepad, default tomboy note here on top. first think step do open terminal follow the gpg --fingerprint. Look it different, i have result kind this:
benny@b3nY:~$ gpg --fingerprint
gpg: directory `/home/benny/.gnupg' created
gpg: new configuration file `/home/benny/.gnupg/gpg.conf' created
gpg: WARNING: options in `/home/benny/.gnupg/gpg.conf' are not yet active during this run
gpg: keyring `/home/benny/.gnupg/pubring.gpg' created
gpg: /home/benny/.gnupg/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created

...but the site say kind like this:
Retrieving the key in Ubuntu

Open a terminal and enter:

gpg --fingerprint

GPG will display a message similar to:

pub 1024D/12345678 2007-01-26
Key fingerprint = 0464 39CD 2486 190A 2C5A 0739 0E68 04DC 16E7 CB72
Geoffrey Hayes (My OpenPGP key) <email address hidden>
sub 2048g/ABCDEF12 2007-01-26

Highlight and copy only the numeric fingerprint: 0464 39CD 2486 190A 2C5A 0739 0E68 04DC 16E7 CB72 in the example above.

Different!

Nah, dont tell me what lucky... I do received red and yellow past years, may be 2007. I dont have what yours, and I'm not wait! its ready... I have 7.10 title, is that expired or trash?

Maybe order a new cd now - then try downloading new one
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
I try to get 2 copies so that i can keep one and pass one on ;)

7.10 is expired but might still be useful for some things. For Notepad try

Applications - Office - Text-Editor

also some helpful hints in this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

But really a 7.10 cd is mostly useful to put a coffee mug on to stop the heat damaging the table or perhaps as an artwork or a collectors item or as a mini-frisbee and the Rainbow colours on the other side are very pretty too ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

It should be possible to upgrade it to 8.04 but it will take a while to download the updates & the upgrade for that. Try

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

i think that should do the trick
Good luck and regards from

When the alert said 100% complete did the machine show a different desktop from the one you normally get with 7.10? If so then that was right. On the top grey bar it has a firefox icon that should be able to get into here. Also it should have an icon in the top right-hand corner that says "install"

From my experience point of view. You should not want to much at the time if you´re new to Linux. Just take baby steps. I did too and that´s building my knowledge of Linux more and more. By looking at some problems people have, you should be learning too.

And use search engine´s like Google to find answers if you can´t find it here. We are not the only users of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is Debian based, so perhaps you can find your answers in Debian forums or where ever.

Hi

If you haven't removed 7.10 then please feel free to ask it as a new question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

I am not sure if Rob meant to post that to a different question but if not then i think he was saying to learn Ubuntu gradually. Sometimes people want everything to work right now but it takes time to get used to some things - so it's worth keeping Windows (or something) so that you can keep using that for the things you can't yet do in linux until you have time to explore and learn another small part of using linux. It's a good plan but i think some of your troubles need fixing even before you can use linux at all ;)

For removing 7.10 we have to find out if it is installed inside Windows using the Wubi or if it was installed properly on its own partition. Hopefully we can trouble-shoot through that if you post this as a new question :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
