powercut during upgrade

Asked by Lostados

A power cut interrupted the upgrading process from 6.10 to 7.04 towards its end (I think there were some 10-20 minutes to go).
Now the computer no longer runs: as I turn it on, it stops dead just after starting. It will not read an image disc (thought I could reinstall Ubuntu), not even XP restorarion CD that came with it.
any suggestions as to what to do?

If you computer is unable to read from your CD driver it could be a BIOS problem, or an hardware failure.
Check the BIOS and eventually flash it again if you can.

It was indeed the BIOS!!! A computer expert & friend told me the BIOS had become a big, big mess.

Could it be due to the sudden interruption of the installation process?

No, it certainly is because of the sudden interruption of power (actually, it could also be during during surge or if there were any power spikes in between).
If you can afford it, go for an UPS, something I do not regret having done.
