Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: Fatal Exception in interrupt

Asked by Reilly W

I am a n00b at BIOS, so Linux is hard enough, but I am trying to learn. I downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 three days ago, and tried installing. It gave me the message:

"1719665 <0> Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: Fatal Exception in interrupt 17179665.200000"

So then I tried Ubuntu 6.06 downloaded from the Ubuntu Website.
The same message came up with different numbers at the begining and end.

I tried another download, to make sure my integrity wasn't a problem, and again the message came up.

So I tried running 6.06 in Safe Mode, and when the loading came to "Hardware Drivers" it froze.

I am currently running a Modified Gateway 831 GM.
I am trying to replace my WIndows install on a partitioned 250 GB SATA Hardrive.
(Partitions on Widows:
- - - C: 16 GB (windows)
- - - D: 25 GB
- - - E: 200 GB
- - - F: 5 GB (paging File)
All in NTFS, which I thought linux would format to FAT32 with installation.

512 RAM, Double Slot (2x 256 Sticks)
Add-On ATI 9250 Graphics Card
Intel Pentium 4 Processor, 3.0 Ghz

When running widows, there where problems with virtual memory and memory.

For the last two days, I've been looking on-line to no avail. If someone could give me a sense of direction, or some help, I would greatly appreciate it.

NOTE: I never get to the installation, this all happens prior to seeing the LIVE CD open. It is during the loading process, not the installation process.

The LIVE CD opens to the Main Menu, and when I click on Start or Install, it loads and then it causes errors.

CORRECTION: The LIVE CD never brings up the Ubuntu Screen. It Goes to the Main Menu, and then loads and then has errors.

Can you check your memory? Its an option on the boot menu (memtest). Its a bit long but worth it.

OK, your cd is not valid then.
You may also want to check your image for defects before burning.
Run the following command in a console:

md5sum cdimage.iso

where cdimage.iso is the image you have downloaded.

Compare the result with the official one in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

In case you need MD5SUM for windows, you can try this one here:

http://www.etree.org/cgi-bin/counter.cgi/software/md5sum.exe

If the image is OK proceed with burning (try a lower speed and/or a different program) otherwise download again the image.

Can you help with this problem?
