Probem with sound from a website in Firefox/Ubuntu

Asked by Louis H. Poulin II

Hello,

I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 on two of my machines. So far I like it, save one little issue. There is a web site I use for my jump rope timing and other needs, http://www.speedbagforum.com/timer.html, I am unable to get any sound out of Firefox or Epiphany on this website. The maintainer of this applet said to install mplayer, which I already had installed. System sounds work, MP3 and movies work, Youtube works, another similar website works, I have no idea what else to try.

I just need my round timer back!

For example in windows xp this site needs quick time plugin to play. What plugin you were asked to install in ubuntu? Is there any error? Have you done any system upgrade after your install?

I do not get an error at all. I was never prompted to ask for a plugin because the first thing I did after installing was get a lot of multimedia plugins for all of my various needs. I will install a copy of Ubuntu into a virtual machine later today and glean what info I can out of that.

Does installing the gecko-mediaplayer package help?

Well, I installed the gecko-mediaplayer package and it didn't work.

So, while I'm typing this I'm just finishing the install on my VM, sound is up and running on it. I'm not prompted for a plugin at all when I start the timer. But there is an odd little underscore at the top left of the webpage. I'm installing gecko-mediaplayer again on the VM. The underscore is still there. That's all I have atm.

I installed a Debian VM and it said "Unknown Plugin (Audio/x-wav)" required.

Actually, I can't get any sound out of the site either. I see other "no sound" complaints in the user forum, like: http://www.speedbagforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1636

Can you help with this problem?
