Asked by pepperblue

I currently updated(partial updation) my ubuntu 9.04. But after updation when i rebooted into grub, i see only memtest of ubuntu and my Windows XP dual boot option. I dont see any generic or recovery mode of ubuntu. And i could have reinstalled it to pc but my datas will get lost. How can i make entry of Ubuntu 9.04 generic and recovery mode from Grub bot menu coz i cant boot into ubuntu.. but i can boot into my XP.

Boot from LiveCD, or install ext3 driver to Windows. After that mount your ext3 partition and find, is your data still present? After that find file /boot/grub/menu.lst and try change it. Or at least print that file here.

You data still OK.

Boor form LiveCD, execute
>sudo mount|grep sda
or
>sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
where 1 is number of you parition (it may be 2 or 3 or above, just find you parition with Linux)

execute (stage #2)
>find /boot|grep vmlinux
>find /boot|grep initrd

add to file menu.lst those lines

title Ubuntu, kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=fccafcc7-d7cc-4594-9459-a8f0db7b9f7f ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
quiet

and don't forger replace
"/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic" and "initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic"
with path on files, which found by stage #2
