installing from cd

how to install or set up an application from cd,
i have opened the files and it opend in archive manager,
don't know how to proceed further

try using Synaptic Package Manager and hunt around the File and Edit menu's to see if something there helps

i am a complete new user of linux,i have got some linux software cd ,while trying in synaptic manager , it shows the files in the cd are not debian,
can i install softwares that are not in packages of ubuntu?

you can install the "rmp" packages or from the source . for rmp file you can use Alien (http://freshmeat.net/projects/alien/) to convert it into "deb" format then you can install that software. if you try to in stall from the source then first read the README file of that source folder.

For installing any software in ubuntuto it is recommended to use the Synaptic Package Manager of the Add/remove or one thing you can do is to use the repository DVD.
