9.04 Speedstep not working, P III laptop overheating

Asked by irwjager

Hi,

I have an old laptop here (Twinhead Pentium III 1133Mhz) which regularly overheats on Jaunty/9.04. While looking into the issue, it turns out that CPU throttling is not working. I realize that this in itself should not cause overheating, but it sure doesn't help things...

I compiled a kernel without the CPU frequency setting modules, making them externally loadable .ko modules. When trying to load the modules using modprobe, none of them will load.
'modprobe acpi-cpufreq' yields 'No such device', as do the older deprecated speedstep-<x> modules.

There's nothing in the Kernel ring buffer (dmesg) other than a reassuring "ACPI: Processor [CPU0] (supports 8 throttling states)", no errors. I did spot "weird, boot CPU (#0) not listedby the BIOS", but that shouldn't really impact things, should it?

I'm really lost! Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Ivo

This sounds like something worth posting in a few different forums at the same time and then just copy the link from whichever gives a good answer into all the rest. Mostly we just deal with the basics in here although some in here could probably help, if they spot this question! things are kinda rushed in here this week.

Anyway, you might have more luck at
http://www.linuxquestions.org
which is a more general linux, rather than Ubuntu-specific, forum and it tends to keep questions open for longer so hopefully you'll find more people give an answer although it might take them longer.

Also this page might help you find some other good places to ask about this
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Signpost/Questions#help

But don't give up on us completely! There are some excellent people in here that probably know all about this sort of advanced linux stuff :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
