Why do I keep getting updates for Firefox-3.5 and Firefox-3.5-branding?

Asked by ernie

Why do I keep getting updates for Firefox-3.5 and Firefox-3.5-branding? I have installed these updates at least 3 times, however, these keep showing up in Update Manager.

Uninstalling the previous version of Firefox did not help.

By the way, the current (3.5) version of Firefox that I am currently running is called Shiretoko, and has a different icon than the customary Firefox one.

Finally, I downloaded a tar.bz2 file from the Mozilla website -- thinking that would be the way to get the real thing - but I have no idea has to proceed with this file.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thaanks.

Shiretoko is a different web-browser from Firefox. Both are produced by Mozilla, along with other web-browsers; Seamonkey, BonEcho and perhaps more. Shiretoko does look almost identical - i haven't yet found the differences. Proper Firefox 3.5 had a vulnerability although the patch has been released already i think - although i think only some Windows machines were likely to be affected. Anyway. Try making sure you also have proper firefox installed in your package manager, perhaps check in

Applications - Add/Remove Applications

I would leave it for about 2 days tho, just to make sure java doesn't get exploited - or go to "Edit" - "Preferences" and use the "Advanced" button beside java to make sure scripts don't get run automatically, at least until about Sunday or Monday ;)
Good luck and regards from

Thanks for the clarification regarding Shiretoko.

Any idea though why I keep getting the same updates for Firefox-3.5 and Firefox-3.5-branding over and over in Update Manager?

No, i've been trying to avoid that but it might help to do some routine maintenanceon the update manager. Try going up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type

apt-get -h

the -h tag is useful for getting a quick cheat-sheet on how to use a command. All the different linux distros, not just Ubuntu have this feature.

apt-get clean

apt-get autoclean

apt-get check

That should hopefully de-clutter you update manager and you should be able to complete that 3.5 update just one last time and then be free of it *fingers crossed*. That was interesting that Shiretoko is Firefox Development branch :)

Thanks all, good luck and regards from

Actually, somehow the issue went away. It didn't happen when I last checked. Thanks again.
