Installing my printer

Asked by rmergy

I am new to Ubuntu. I have a DCP-165C Brother ink jet printer. Ubuntu selected a ML12 and installed the driver for it. My printer does not work. I found a driver for my printer online at the Brother web site and have downloaded it to the desktop.
/home/robert/Desktop/dcp165ccupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.rpm

How do I install this into the system?

rpm files are not for ubuntu, ubuntu uses deb files.

An review on Amazon.co.uk says this printer works on Ubuntu using drivers from Brother
<http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3UG3XTTOCP2Y5/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm>. I have
noticed over the years that large vendors often provide drivers for linux on support sites
outside the USA. Since we all know M$ would never be allowed to pressure vendors to
drop support for non-M$ OS's in North America, I can't explain these curious omissions.

If you can't get .deb packages from Brother you can try <http://www.howtoforge.com/converting_rpm_to_deb_with_alien>. I used this to make .deb files for Canon drivers
but I also had to use symbolic links to "rename" some libraries to the names used
in the binaries.

I got the ,deb driver and I tried to use the installer in Ubuntu but got no results. I the ran the trouble shooter and got a ton of information that I do not understand. I have saved that file and can send it to anyone who can maybe help.

I have read the information on the Brother web site, did not really understand it. I know that from the comand line using the cups utility that the driver can be installed, but I do not understand how to use cups. I can get to the command line. What would be useful to me is a list of commands that will get my printer installed. Can someone help me with this?

Maybe there is a PPD file in the deb, if you extract the deb file then you can use that with cups. Or you can find a PPD file on its own.

Can you help with this problem?
