Sorry - it's not obvious from your question whether you can or can't hear the DVDs when they're playing.
If you can SEE the images but don't get any sound, please try adjusting the volume control in the player application, as well as adjusting the main system volume control. Do you get sound in any other applications (or even do you hear a sound when you log in?)

which application do you use to play the dvd?
generally you can find it clicking on Help -> About in the application menu bar

First i would work through the whole of the Medibuntu worksheet
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
I would go with the non-free components

Then try playing a dvd, if it's not sorted then try these two troubleshooting guides
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
