After upgrade to 8.04 LTS. Lost all sound!

Asked by Paul Weston

Hi. I'm running Dapper LTS on Athlon 64 bit dual core machine. I'm dual booting my hard drive with Ubuntu Studio. Everything OK until kernel upgrade from 2.6 24-23 to 2.6 24-24 (on Dapper) then all sound was lost. Checked ALSA mixer. All OK. Sound still normal on 'Studio'. Any ideas?
PS. Just noticed. Volume icon displaying the muted symbol even though Vol at full! Is this relevant?

Ubuntu 8.04 audio

Please be sure all needed kernel modules are installed to make this check and install them:
Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then reboot your pc.

Always useful is the online Ubuntu doc https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/

Hope this helps

Hi Marco, I did as you instructed and finished with a reboot. Still no-go I'm afraid. Here's the output:-

You can run:

sudo apt-get --purge autoremove to get rid of the error at the bottom of the output. It will also save you space.

Are all volume sliders maxed and not muted?

Purged kernel 2.6 24-23 as suggested. Rebooted and found no change.

Hi All. I haven't a clue how or why but I've just booted up and all sound functions are back to normal! It's an absolute mystery to me as I haven't done anything different to the way I normally do things. If you want me to post you any terminal outputs to help shed light on what's happened I'll be only to pleased to do so. Otherwise I'll just say many thanks for all your attempts to assist.
Thanks again
Paul
