/etc/aliases file shows root aliased to my username

Asked by Scott Price

While looking at files in my /etc directory, I noticed that the "aliases" file has created an alias for root : prices (my username). It says it was automatically created. Is this normal?

This is a printout of the file (/etc/aliases):

# Added by installer for initial user
root: prices
clamav: root

I'm thinking this does not look right, but I'm new to Linux (Ubuntu Intrepid AMD-64). I just installed clamav, if that's relevant, and I'm using an HP AMD-64 Dual Core 4200 system with 2G RAM.

I would appreciate some guidance. Thank you.

If you note the 'installer' comment, that it added it and this is for sudo purposes. I'm no expert on sudo and it's setup so I'll leave that as a research exercise if you want more information (or if someone wants to respond with a more expert comment).

So this is normal from my understanding and previous conversations with others.

Thank you for your response. I will do some more research, and hopefully someone else will have a comment.

This is normal. /etc/aliases defines aliases for local email addresses. So this makes any mail to root to be redirected to the user created during installation.
