¿have you load a floppy modules?
post here the result of this command:
lsmod | grep floppy

Maybe, as your bios support it, udev ubuntu try to access to it. If you haven't got any other problems, you don't get worry with it.

I have been dealing with this error for a while, and the curios thing is that after 6 to 8 hours the system begins to slow down until it's not possible to keep working, so a reset is needed, looking at the logs of the system the only error that I found is the one mentioned in this post, so I've blacklisted the floppy module and disabled the entry at the fstab file, hope this behavior goes away with this fix.

That trick would work if you install into HDD. What if you wanted to use it as a LiveCD? My PC struck there for 5 mins each time I rebooted into LiveCD.

Trying unsucessfully to install Ubuntu 7.04 from the live cd on a Compaq EVO N600c, PIII-1.2ghz, 256MB RAM and 38GB hard drive. This laptop does not have a floppy Drive installed. I tried disabling the floppy in the BIOS but the live CD immediatley balks that something is turned off and crashes.
With floppy enabled, The live CD takes over 15 minutes to load and once started seems to be working. However, when I try proceed with the install it hangs there for hours before opening a blank install window. In the meantime, the the dvd drive is pounding hard and never seems to write to the hard drive. I know the hard drive is accessile becuase with the cd live, I was able to use the GED partition and manually partiton the drive. for testing Windows XP installed flawlessly which is unusual for laptops.

Can anyone Help?? should I try the alternative CD.

i have the same problem with my toshiba tecra 8200. no floppy drive.

it shows this error 4 times with different increasing integers then starts loading the hardware. after that, the sound comes up. the displays but not complete. i can only see the taskbar of ubuntu7.10 a couple of inches to the top of my screen. the bottom part of my screen looks like its a corrupt graphics and you cant make out anything. because of the graphic issues i cant install ubuntu, cos i cant see where the install icon is located on the desktop.

i have tried installing the alternate version but the cd does not seem to boot. i dont know where all this problem is coming from, but i would like to get a solution. because i fell in love with ubuntu the day i saw i.

also need help on how to burn the alternate cd and the files that are to be in it. thats ubuntu 7.10

The only solution for me was to use the alternative CD. I'm not sure why the alternative CD (Debian) will not load for you since it does not use the desktop graphics just basic graphics. You probably have a bad image. Download the ISO image from the website to your hard drive and then use a CD burning software like Nero. For some reason, I did have a problem burning a CD using UBUBNTU for an unrelated issue but thats why I used Nero to burn the ISO image. Make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM.

i dont have a floppy but i can install one easy so i will try it ill right back sayin if thats the prob or not

If you manage to disable the floppy drive in BIOS I think you will not get this error message.
That is just a workaround however.

Actually Magnus, I am getting it and my floppy drive is definitely turned off in BIOS so it doesn't work for everyone. Maybe I should try ENABLING it LOL!!
