i am trying to partion my hard drive using ubuntu live cd and the part where it allows u to partion it is blank

i am trying to install ubuntu on my computer and when it come to partion the drive it is blank shows no partions on the drive what should i do do i need to format the hard drive if so how do i do that

You need to run gparted with:

gksudo gparted

Can you also provide the output of:

sudo fdisk -l
