How to configure autologin when ssh'd into ubuntu server

I am logged into a ssh session to a Ubuntu server (.04

I am trying to configure autologin using gdm.conf, after restarting gdm with autologing set to true and the user is defined I attempted to log in using vncviewer, gnome does not appear.

Servers do not need GUI. Thats why they are servers. If you want a desktop then install the desktop system.

The server iso does not come with an x server as it is a security rish (more services running) and also takes up resources.

You can configure the entirety of a server via ssh which is much more secure and lighter on the network. You can also instate web interfaces for other things (CUPS uses a web interface by default http://servername:631)
